Njoya Criticises Leaders of Church in Symbols Row

The Nation (Nairobi)

Two church leaders yesterday differed at a meeting believed to have been called to resolve a dispute over the destruction of artefacts said to be linked to Freemasonry.

Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) moderator David Githii said the issue which had sparked a heated debate among the faithful would be handled by its top organs.

And he denied that the meeting at the Sigona church in Kiambu had been called to tackle the matter.

However, retired cleric Timothy Njoya accused the moderator and the rest of the church leaders of misleading members.

He told journalists at the church that the meeting had indeed been called by the moderator to educate its leaders on the so-called Satanic symbols.

"The PCEA church stands for pure repentance of sins and not cleansing of objects," he said. "We have come here to tell him that he is wrong and must stop these teachings."

The closed-door meeting which was attended by about 50 ministers and elders from five Kiambu presbyteries, including immediate former moderator Jessee Kamau, began at 11am and went well into the afternoon.

Informal discussions among the leaders dwelt on the row, but Dr Githii insisted that the main meeting had nothing to do with the issue.

"We organised this meeting long before the controversy arose and it's purely a matter with a different agenda," he said.
